  • NUTRITIONAL EVALUATION OF RAW BAMBARA NUT OFFAL (Vigna subterranea (L) Verde) AND SUPPLEMENTARY ENZYME USING GROWING COCKERELS

    » ABSTRACT A study involving three experiments was conducted to investigate the effect of graded levels of raw bambara nut offal with supplementary enzyme (Roxazyma G ®) in growing cockerels. In experiment 1 (starter phase), a total of 120 three-week- old cockerel chicks (Harco strain) were randomly divided into 8 groups of 15 birds each. The groups were randomly assigned to 8 isocaloric (11.30 MJ /Kg ME) and isonitrogenous (20.02-20.06% crude protein) diets in a 4 x 2 factorial arrangement involving four levels (0, 10, 15 and 20%) of raw bambara nut offal and 2 enzyme levels (0 and 0.02%). Data were collected from 3 weeks to 8 weeks of age. In experiment 2 (grower phase), a total of 120 three-week-old cockerel from experiment 1 were randomly divided into 8 groups of 15 birds each. The groups were randomly assigned to 8 isocaloric (11.09 MJ /Kg ME) and isonitrogenous (15.04-15.16% Cp) grower diets in a 4 x 2 factorial arrangement involving 4 levels (0, 10, 20 and 30%) of raw bambara nut offal and 2 enzyme levels (0 and 0.02%). Data were collected from 8 weeks to 18 weeks of age. In experiment 3 (finisher phase), a total of 120 eighteen-week-old growing cockerels from experiment 2 were randomly divided into 8 groups of 15 birds each. The groups were randomly assigned to 8 isocaloric (10.92 MJ /Kg ME) and isonitrogenous (18.00-18.04% CP) finisher diets in a 4 x 2 factorial arrangement involving 4 levels (0, 20, 30 and 40) raw bambara nut offal and 2 enzyme levels (0 and 0.02%). Data were collected from 18-22 weeks of age. Results indicated that at the starter phase (experiment 1), the effect of treatment on body weight gain, feed conversion ratio and feed cost per kg gain were not significant (P>0.05). Feed intake decreased significantly beyond 10% RBO inclusion level. Increasing levels of raw bambara nut offal also decreased crude fibre retention. Enzyme supplementation increased (P<0.05) crude protein retention at the 10% RBO inclusion level; increased (P<0.05) ether extract retention at the 0% RBO inclusion level and increased (P<0.05) nitrogen - free extract retention at the 10 and 20% RBO inclusion levels. In the grower phase (experiment 2), the effects of dietary treatments on such performance parameters like final body weight, total body weight gain, daily feed intake, feed conversion ratio, feed cost per kg gain and protein efficiency ratio were significant (P<0.05). It could be observed that the performance of cockerel growers on treatment 7 (30% RBO diet without enzyme) in terms of total body weight gain, daily weight gain, feed conversion ratio, protein intake, protein efficiency ratio and feed cost per kg gain was superior to that of birds on the control diets. Apparent dry matter, crude protein, crude fibre, ether extract and nitrogen-free extract retentions were significantly (P<0.05) affected by treatments. Enzyme supplementation of the RBO diets improved DM, crude protein and nitrogen-free extract retentions at the 10% RBO inclusion level. Crude fibre retention was also enhanced by the addition of enzyme at the 10, 20 and 30% RBO inclusion levels. In the finisher phase (experiment 3), final body weight, total body weight gain, daily weight gain, daily feed intake, feed conversion ratio, feed cost per kg gain, protein intake, and protein efficiency ratio were significantly (P<0.05) affected by dietary treatments. Increasing levels of RBO resulted in reduced feed intake and subsequent reduction in protein intake. Enzyme supplementation resulted in increased weight gain at the 30 and 40 % RBO inclusion levels. Enzyme supplementation also resulted in reduced feed cost per kg weight gain at the 30 % RBO inclusion level. No lesions were observed in all the internal organs examined. There was no mortality of birds in all the treatments. It was concluded that up to 20, 30 and 40% RBO can be included in the diets of cockerel starters, cockerel growers and cockerel finishers, respectively with or without supplementary enzyme for normal growth of birds. ...Continue Reading »
